Note: Mrs. Powers was the wife of Dr. John Powers, head of surgery at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He hired me to interview accident victims (all of whom he had treated) or their survivors for a paper he planned to write on the effects of a trans-continental highway (the New York State Thruway, Rt. 90) on upstate New York, not my favorite job. But he was remembered for admonishing Don who had the bad luck to sneeze in a meeting of interns with Dr. Powers. Dr. Powers knew that Don was planning on a phsychiatric residency as soon as he finished the internship. Dr. Powers was old school and expected everyone to stand whenever he entered the room. What he said was, "Don't you believe in the germ theory of disease? Wear a mask next time." I didn't really know Mrs. Powers. Dr. Powers' sister Miss Powers, however, was very friendly. She gave us a wedding present - the pressed glass cake stand which I still use.
