Aunt Margaret's Sugared Doughnuts Thanks to Sue 1 cup sugar 2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 3½ to 4 cups flour ½ cup whole milk ½ cup. light cream 2 tsp. vanilla 3 eggs 3 Tbsp. melted shortening Heat deep fat or oil 3 inches deep to 370o. Mix together the dry ingredients. In another bowl, mix together vanilla, eggs lightly beaten, milk, light cream, and vanilla and add altogather to the dry ingredients. Then mix in melted butter. Roll out to about ½ inch thick. Use a circular cookie cutter with an inner circle or a real doughnut cutter. Drop the doughnuts and/or the holes, one or two at a time, into the fat. When they appear to be browned on the underside, flip them over to finish. Let them cool before shaking them in a brown paper bag with granulated sugar. Note: Aunt Margaret used to make these and they were always a huge hit. Unfortunately, her recipe came with ingredients only. If you find a better way to do it, let me know. |
